DUERO ROUTE PORTUGAL
Vineyards, camellias and Romanesque heritage (1-7 October 2020)
As the Duero flows towards the Atlantic and reaches the border with Portugal it turns into the Douro, taking on a delicate Portuguese sensibility. The air becomes warmer and the river’s course become windier, and the vineyards, which stretch for in all directions, still reflect the land’s spirit of heroism, found not only in the memory of wars and battles –which is also the case– but particularly in the well-tended and labour-intensive vineyards, on those terraces (called socalcos) that have turned this landscape into a World Heritage Site. From Bragança to Porto, passing through Lamego and Vila Real, the river follows the same path as the wine, from the region’s most remote and silent corners towards the busy ocean.

DUERO ROUTE SPAIN
Aranda de Duero, Rueda and Toro, designations with history
The Duero is synonymous with vineyards, wine, wineries, cuisine rooted in the land, based on the simplest, most natural local resources. But the banks of the Duero also safeguard memories of an extensive, intense history, border stories from dark and bellicose times, and others from golden ages in which the only borders were those of distant lands yet to be explored. And in testimony stand the region’s centuries-old cities, places like Zamora, Toro, Tordesillas and Peñafiel, its ancient monasteries, like Valbuena and Retuerta, and its wines, as powerful and dignified as the land itself.

Free dinnerDay 4. Brno- Mikulov-Pálava-Pavlov
Bicycle tour with stops to see monuments and lunch
Bicycle tour. The Mikulov wine trail runs like a ribbon between two low ridges, the Pálava. Words cannot describe the feeling you´ll get when you sit down in front of the small wine cellars above Dolní Dunajovice majestic towers of the Mikulov Chateau, continuing with the ruins of a watch-tower above the town and the rugged contours of limestone rocks, which from the fortifications of the medieval castle Devicky then drop down to the water surface of the Nové Mlýny (New Mills) reservoir system. Between you and the Pálava hills lies the "Moravian Grand Canyon"-a green valley of vineyards that promise excellent wines.
Pálava protected Landscape area.
There aren´t many places in the Czech Republic that can boast such a beautiful and diverse landscape as the Pálava Hills, with their snow-white limestone rocks, springtime mosaic of blooming steppes and vineyards spanning across sun soaked hillsides. A climb up to the ruins of the Devicky Castle is rather daunting due to its steep incline, but the hilltop offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the large body of water below and the surrounding wine country. The shortest paths lead from Pavlov or Dolní Vestonice. Also because of the occurrence of rare thermophilic plants and animals, Pálava is preserved as a Protected Landscape Area. UNESCO has included de area on the list of Biosphere Reserves.Mikulov.
When you arrive in this town, you fist steps will certainly lead you towards the chateau. Back in the days of the first Czech rulers, a Romanesque stone castle stood here. By the 13th century it was in the hands of the Liechtenstein family, which began its Gothic reconstruction.
You can buy the booklet in the chateau´s wine museum, where you will also find a giant barrel with a capacity of 101,400 litres (the eighth largest in Europe!). Wine cellars are built in several places on the outskirts of town, and particularly impressive are the vintners´houses with baroque façades in the location called Na Jámee.Pavlov.
At the foot of the highest peak of the Pálava hills- Devín- is the winemaking village of Pavlov, which since the 13th century has been the site of Devicky Castle. Its ruins, which tower above the village, offers a breathtaking view of the Nové Mlýny reservoirs and the entire region below Pálava.
The wealth brought by the renowned local wine is evident from the ornate Baroque gables of the vintners´ houses with wine cellars on Česká and Na Cimburí lanes. In one of the local cellars there is a newly installed exhibition of historical winemaking eqipment. Don´t hesitate to try the famous glass pipette used to extract wine from the barrel. Below Pavlov, there is also a boat stop, where you can embark for a tour of the vast Nové Mlyýny reservoir system.
Hotel Barceló Brno Palace *****

It is ranked among the best vineyards locations in Europe, and its wines graced the royal tables of Prague and Vienna as early as the Midle Ages. Today , you can come here on booking and taste the wine from these southern slopes at an onsite wine-tasting kiosk that is open throughout the tourist season.
Free afternoon. Crystal stores.
Hotel Barceló Brno Palace *****
Dinner free.Day 6. Straznice. Wine trail. Bicycle tour
9,00 h. Brno-Straznice
Bicycle tour with stops to see monuments and lunch
You will feel as if you are in another century at the museum of South Moravian Villages. Do not expect some boring institution- it is an open-air museum where you can see for yourself how ordinary people once lived and worked. You can literally touch the vernacular architecture as well as water works and vineyard and farm buildings. Every year in June, the open-air museum transforms into a large stage - if you like singing or dancing, come to see performers from all over the world. The close contact with live folklore may cause you to want to join in.
Do you know what Slovácko verbunk is? If you were from this region, you would sing it and maybe even dance it. It is the local style of folk dance and because of its uniqueness is inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is said that verbunk can not be taugh, but that boys from the Slovácko region are born with it in their blood.Bicycle tour: the landscape that opens up here is perhaps the most picturesque in all Moravia. The eastern border with Slovaquia is formed by the ridge of the Little Carpathians, and their slopes, gradually descending to the Morava River, are now a protected landscape area. There once rang out here the sound of scythes cutting the endless meadows, where hay would be stacked to dry directly in the fields, after which horse-drawn carts would carry it to barns in the villages. The eye will fall mainly upon old houses with wooden roofs and white walls upon blue bases. You can admire the simple but wonderfully captivating beauty of vernacular architecture in Blatnice pod Svatym Antonikem. The walls of the grape-pressing facilities at the local cellars are made of adobe bricks, formed from compacted unfired clay. There was severe shortage of stone here, but not of wine.
